VSPH IMPH Students Conduct Social Practice Research in Chongqing City Alternative Heading: Students Conduct Social Practice Research in Chongqing City

Social Practice Research stands as a pivotal pillar in the curriculum of Tsinghua University's International Master of Public Health (IMPH) Program, distinguishing itself as a key element of the master's degree in public health. While equipping students with theoretical knowledge and research methodologies, the program also immerses them in on-site research and analysis to gather firsthand insights into public health issues in China. This experience deepens students’ understanding of practical health challenges in China and broadens their perspectives on health issues in the country and other developing nations. It plays a crucial role in cultivating students' decision-making skills on critical health matters and enhancing their leadership abilities to address real-world challenges.

From January 14th to 18th, 16 IMPH students from 11 countries participated in a comprehensive 5-day social practice research program held in Chongqing City.

Engaging in discussions and exchanges with faculty and students from the College of Public Health at Chongqing Medical University, Associate Professor Tang Kun from VSPH and Professor Liu Qin from Chongqing Medical University collaboratively facilitated a class for students from both institutions. They offered diverse perspectives on maternal and child health from international, domestic, and local viewpoints, bringing active interaction and communication between faculty and students, thereby strengthening mutual understanding.

The research team conducted visits to various institutions including Bishan District Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Chongqing Nursing Vocational College, Jiulongpo District Disease Prevention and Control Center, Chenjiaqiao Hospital, Chenjiaqiao Community Health Service Center, and the company Southwest Pharmaceutical. These visits provided valuable insights into the development of grassroots medical and health systems, inter-departmental cooperation, and the practical application of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. The team delved into discussions on the opportunities and challenges presented by China's aging population, sharing experiences from their respective countries.

This hands-on experience allowed students to gain a comprehensive understanding of China's remarkable achievements in medical services and public health, as well as the role of traditional medicine in safeguarding public health. Simultaneously, they conducted a comparative analysis of the healthcare systems in their respective countries, fully recognizing the advantages of China's developmental model for medical and health services. The students also put forth bilateral cooperation suggestions aimed at drawing lessons from China's experiences.

About the IMPH Program

The IMPH Program seeks to cultivate high-level leaders in the global health field with a profound understanding of China. Targeting government officials, disease prevention and control professionals, researchers, and employees of international organizations and non-governmental organizations from developing countries, the program has trained over 150 outstanding students from nearly 40 countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America over the past decade. Through systematic learning at Tsinghua University, students gain a solid foundation in public health theories and analytical tools, comprehend the development of China's health industry, and acquire insights into the management and disease control practices in China's health sector. This equips them with enhanced decision-making capabilities on major health issues and practical problem-solving skills.
