On April 7th, the Embassy of Ethiopia to China sent an official letter to the China-Africa Leadership Development Institute (CALDI) as a formal request for collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute to share experiences in the identification and mitigation mechanisms for COVID-19. In order to uphold global public health security and enhance international anti-pandemic cooperation while implementing President Xi Jinping’s guidance of “the most powerful weapon to fight diseases is science and technology”, given during his inspection of research on novel coronavirus pneumonia prevention and treatment in Tsinghua University, Vice President and Provost Yang Bin led the coordination meeting so that the work scheme could be planned with CALDI supplying a video of university science and research development under the monitor of the University Office of International Cooperation and Exchange.
Yang Bin, Professor Engida Getachew, Former UNESCO DDG, and current CALDI Co-President and His Excellency Ambassador Teshome Toga, Ethiopian Ambassador in China, made remarks in the video, underscoring the significance of Sino-Ethiopian academic exchange for fighting the pandemic, and called for the further action to contain the spread of COVID-19 on research collaboration and experience sharing. Ambassador Teshome expressed his appreciation for Tsinghua and CALDI’s efforts and contribution.
The university professors sharing lectures in the video included Professor Cheng Jing, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of Engineering Research Center for Beijing Biochip Technology in Tsinghua University’s School of Medicine; Professor Dong Jiahong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering , Dean of the School of Clinical Medicine and President of Tsinghua Chang Gung Hospital; Professor Zhang Linqi, Chair of the Comprehensive AIDS Research Center and Global Health and Infectious Diseases Center in the School of Medicine; Professor Ding Sheng, Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director of The Global Health Drug Discovery Institute; Professor Yin Hang, Vice Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director of the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica; Professor Jing Jun, Director of the Public Health Research Center, School of Social Science. They respectively interpreted the latest anti-pandemic research in detail on nucleic acid detection, intelligent prevention and control systems, vaccine development, global drug research ,traditional Chinese medicine in prevention and treatment, and China's experience, demonstrating the scientific research competency and social contribution of our university.
The university video will be shared mainly with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and Public Health Institute, contributing to Africa’s struggle against COVID-19.
