Big Data Science in Public Health: Applications, Opportunities, and Challenges

【Abstract】

Big data science has been increasingly used in public health over the past decade. In this seminar, I will introduce the basic concepts and approaches of big data science. I will present several applications of big data science across diverse public health fields, including chronic disease prevention, women’s health, and infectious disease control and prevention. I will at last discuss potential opportunities and challenges in applying big data science in public health.

Dr. Yan Li is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Health Policy Modeling Laboratory in the Department of Population Health Science and Policy at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the United States. Dr. Li was elected a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine in 2019. His research interests include big data and systems science modeling in public health, health care management, economic evaluation and cost-effectiveness analysis. Dr. Li has published more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, many of which in leading public health journals such as the American Journal of Public Health, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and Health Affairs. He has received more than $3.6 million in grant funding from the National Institutes of Health as Principal Investigator and participated in 18 other projects funded by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the European Commission, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the New York State Department of Health, and the American Heart Association. He has served as a grant reviewer for NIH and several other funding agencies as well as a peer reviewer for more than 30 high-quality public health journals.
